I get text messages on my iphone and computer, which is fine. But say I get messages on my phone and read and respond to them. When I get back to my computer all these past messages show up on my computer, which is kind of useless. Is there a setting I should have that I don't have set up that's causing this?

It's a feature of the way OS X and iOS interact: you get message history on all your iCloud-connected devices regardless of where you read it.

The only way to disable it is to go to the Preferences menu on Messages on your Mac and disable the account where the messages are coming from. Then, however, you won't get any text messages on your computer, and it sounds like you want them in both places.

You can also delete conversations on each device, but as long as they are all connected via the same iCloud account, you're still going to get them everywhere when a new one comes across.

That's the thing. I like having messages on both, but find it kind of useless to have them show up after the fact on my computer once I've already seen them on the phone. There's no way to have them sync up so the computer knows when I've already read them on the phone, thus no need to notify me on the computer?

Like member "caribiner23" stated, what you're seeing is normal. I like receiving them on my computer because sometimes I'm driving and get a message. I don't want to be distracted while driving, so I just wait until I get home and read the messages on my iMac. And by the way, since we use the same Apple ID for both my iPhone and the wife, I get the same messages on all three devices. I go thru the messages on my computer and delete what I've already read on my phone or vice - versa.
