I have a friend with an iPhone 5 who wants tp upgrade to iOS8, and an iMac running OSX 10.7.5. The iMac cannot be upgraded any further. Has anyone had any issues with this pairing?

In what way? The two devices connect to each other in a variety of ways. Without knowing what you're looking for, I'd suggest consulting the system requirements for each of the services that you use and see how they fit with your hardware.

I'm pretty sure she just wants to sync music in iTunes, iPhoto, and some iCloud features. Probably the basics; contacts, calendar and such. There's no need for iCloud drive.
