Welcome to our forums.

Are you using an administrative account? If you are not the admin on the iBook, then you can not make changes such as updating Leopard.

Okay, where are you trying to get the update from? The only way to get that update is through Apple.

And, since you do not have access to the Mac App Store, you will need to go to Apple Downloads directly to update. Try downloading the combo update to 10.5.8 from here:

There is something else going on with your iBook. You should be able to update Leopard to the latest version which is 10.5.8. That first message about the appropriate access privileges shouldn't be showing up if you are the account holder and the owner of the iBook. I suspect your iBook has hardware problems, perhaps with the hard drive.

Do you have a Leopard DVD? Or a Tiger DVD? If you have one of those, you can boot the iBook with it and then troubleshoot with Disk Utility.

You can find those disks on eBay, but they are going to be expensive. You will also need the universal disk for either Tiger or Leopard not the model specific disk. Not sure if it's worth the expense trying to get that old a machine working again.

No, it won't work. Leopard was on a double sided DVD and actually when I first got my copy back in 2008 it was on two DVDs. You're going to need an original Leopard DVD. The problem you're going to run into is that those DVDs are hard to come by.

Also the iBook was plagued with problems. You really need to find a good one that was well taken care of and has the original disk. Look on eBay or Craig's List and buy your GF a nice one.

Well, first you can't boot an iBook G4 from USB. From a DVD or firewire, yes.

Do a google search on how to install Linux on the iBook. You'll find plenty of good information.
