Numbers sum

I go into Numbers and look at a spreadsheet. I highlight a column and expect to see a sum at the bottom. But its not there. I try hit =
and it only shows the sum of the first number on the top of the column.
How do I show sum....??Thats really the only thing I use in a spreadsheet anyway.... ridiculous..

Using Numbers 10.0 on Catalina. Selecting a column sums it all for me. Selecting a number of rows, sums only those rows.

I deleted Numbers and re installed it. Just to be sure. It still is not showing sum in the sum
box below. I would think the default set up would do that. Do I have a setting wrong.?
I highlight all the numbers in the column and hit return....but nothing. I do get the number of
entries/fields....that shows down below. but nothing else.... is there an alternative to Numbers that is free and good...?

Alternative would be Softmaker Free Office, but Numbers should work

You don't have to hit anything, just highlighting the rows should be enough or selecting the column. Show a screenshot of what you are seeing.

Are the "numbers" actually formatted as numbers and not text? You can check by selecting a cell or cells, then in the right column select "Cell" and make sure the "Data format" is something numeric and not something text.

^ Good point to double-check on, OP. This has gotten me more than once in Excel as well (usually when I've copied/pasted some "numbers").
