I have been trying to install the iTunes update and Quicktime update on my 12" Powerbook. I am running 10.4.2. When I run the SU it completes the download portion and then bombs on the install piece. The only message is there were errors during install please try again. I have also attempted to download the files directly from apple and install, but still will not install. I have repaired permissions, etc. I really don't know what to do next. If it was a winders box I could handle it, but my lack of experience on OSX is killing me. Anyone got and idea?

Thanks,

Nothing in the install.log and I can't find system.log. However, I did find something of interest in the perl.crash.log. See below. This is the last time I tried installing the iTunes update. I thought it may be the memory I have installed, but the error still occurred without the memory in the unit. Any thoughts?

I hate to say this, but it could be an original system memory problem. It's possible the installation of the new memory as you mention could have damaged the existing DIMM(s). Though I'm sure it's very little comfort, this is far from a 'noob problem.' Which install is crashing? Or both?

iTunes and Quicktime updates both fail. BTW, when I refer to noob problem, I really mean I am a newbie to OSX and trying to figure this out. The additional memory has been installed for several months. This problem is recent. Is there any type of memory tests that can be run to see if the system memory is the problem?

I found this in the install.log from the iTunes install attempt.

Install failed: The following install step failed: run preflight script for iTunes

Any ideas. By the way I do appreciate the help.

Sounds like there's a problem with the installer package itself then, since a preflight script is a UNIX script file within many installers on OS X. I don't know enough about it to tell you how you should correct this problem if that's the case. However, this should be impossible anyway since no one else has apparently had this problem with the new iTunes.

did you try repairing your permissions first? this should really be done before and after software installations.

also, try downloading the packages directly from the apple site.

you could always kill the previous installed apps and there related folders, but i think that iTunes and quicktime are too deep in to the system to do this.
