Is it just me... or does no one use iChat?

I mean, I know I live in Ireland and Mac hasn't really taken off, but nobody here uses AIM either. All my friends use MSN :(

Hopefully that will change in the near future. Especially with the new features coming in Leopard, can't wait to see it!

Anyone else find this about iChat?

I use it all the time. Since I really only use AIM, it works fine for me.

AIM is pretty much the standard chat protocol in the US. (AIM...AOL Instant Messenger...America On Line...)

MSN dominates pretty much everywhere else.

Yeah I get what you mean "America"-Online.
One thing that amazes me is that AOL have a HQ here in Ireland but do not provide any services.

Just out of interest actually take a look at this:
http://www.irelandoffline.org/

The sad fact is that here in Ireland there is a Monopoly on the market and I pay 54.99euro per month for a supposedly 2meg connection (DSL).

Thats just over 75USD according to xe.com

This country is a joke, If I ever won the Lotto or something similar I think I'd definately invest in something like this for the benefit of everyone. :(

Not really. It sort of just depends on where your at. Here in my city a lot of people use Yahoo! Messenger. Then the next city over they use MSN.

Just because it has the word America in it doesn't really mean it dominates that country.

I know that it wouldn't particularly dominate a country just because of that name. But you have to wonder, would AOL be as successful if it had a different name? - This is coming from me though - someone who knows nothing about the services they offer really, I just assume they must be popular when we hear about them this side of the pond.

Yeah I use Adium so that I can connect to all my clients whichever protocol they use.

I second Murlyn.

Adium, takes up a much smaller footprint, and works with most protocols.

I'm with Murlyn as well. I connect to both AIM and MSN at the same time with Adium. Plus, I like how it has a record of every chat :D

The only AIM, Jabber, Skype, YIM and .Mac contacts I have are all people I have never actually met; just online acquaintances. All my friends use MSN. It's a shame, but it's like a chain; my friends wont just switch to AIM to talk to me, because all their friends use MSN as-well and so on (so I rarely use IM, I just use the phone).

AOL isn't very popular in the UK, not as much as they used to be anyway (I think everyone realised how rubbish they where and have abandoned them in recent years). My theory on the rise of MSN is, knowing that Hotmail was/is the most popular email service provider; so while checking their spam laden inboxes everyone discovered Messenger.

I have used AIM as long as I have been on the Internet and that started with Genie a LONG time ago. AIM is still what I prefer to use, but I have quite a few friends into Yahoo Messenger. I really do not have any close friends who use MSN.

Just for the record, iChat can be set to record every chat. I have had that option turned on since the beginning. I use Adium also but when I want to share pictures or a small file with friends, iChat works better and then Video/Audio chat also. For just normal Chatting, Adium is great and like has been said, works with all Chat servers with one small program.

iChat is free if you use it with AIM. I believe you are thinking iChat only supports .Mac which does cost to use.
