no picture from HDMI adaptor

Hi i am a newbe so please bear with me , i have connected the adaptor to a Hdmi lead then connected to my TV but i only get the sound no picture ,all i get is a purple looking screen that must come from the Apple i have tried connecting it to other HDMI connections but they are the same i have a mac osx version 10.6.6 purchased before xmas from amazon any ideas would be very helpful.

What computer have you got? Mac Mini? MBP? MB?
Also what adapter DVI - HDMI? etc

By "Purple Screen" do you mean the purple-ish background? Also when you plug it into the tv do you get any picture at all on the Macbook?

the film plays on the mac but not on the tv all i get is sound & the purple like space screen background you see on a mac

Try going to System Preferences > Display, try setting it to "Mirror Display" to see if it appears on the tv.

System Prefs > Displays > Arrangement, there should be a check box at the bottom saying "Mirror Display"

Or just grab the top of the video window before you maximize it with the cursor and drag it to the other screen.

(That "purple looking screen" would be your desktop background.)

Head here to post 2, item 3, and have a read on your options for using both screens.
