Although my trusty Canon MP640 inkjet prints OK, since upgrading to Sierra it won't scan. Canon say that no driver has been produced for this but I wondered of there is a third party source of such a driver.

Hello and welcome to the forum - just went to the Canon website to confirm the statement above and indeed saw the information below; of course, it is Canon's responsibility to write updated drivers for their products.

One suggestion to try - open Image Capture (in the Applications folder - comes w/ macOS) w/ your printer/scanner attached - see if the scanner is recognized and listed; if so, try to scan - more information HERE - good luck and let us know. Dave :)

Well RadDave, thanks so very much; that worked! As the text in the link states, this Image Capture built-in s/w is generally little used and in the 5 years I've had my MacBook Pro I never have. But it works and moreover faster than the Canon driver pre-Sierra. Problem solved. I had d/l Scanner Pro on to my iPhone today (advice from son!) so this gives me options but I love my Canon MP640 and can now still use both its printer and scanner functions. I'll pass this dodge on to him.

GREAT! Image Capture is a powerful little app that many never use - glad that the Canon is scanning! Dave :)

Hey Dave... nice reminder to all about Image Capture! I had even forgotten about that myself since I rarely have to scan anything.

By the way, hope you didn't have to shovel too much snow where you are. :)

Thanks Chscag - my Canon Pixma is still scanning w/ Sierra (used the other day to make a copy of a landscape lighting estimate)! :)

But not to hijack the thread, we got about 6" of snow - took my camera out w/ me Saturday morning getting the paper, so a few pics below - I measured 5" on the back deck posts - I had tarped both cars, so vehicle cleanup was easy (hardest part is folding the tarps back up!) - the temps have been 10 F degrees or more below the usual - this stuff usually melts in a day or two but is still around - did not do much shoveling (just the sidewalk and parts of the driveway). For us 6-7" is the average TOTAL we get for the winter months, so I hope this may be the single storm of the season. Dave

MP600R works fine with Sierra

I just purchased a 2nd hand MP600R for 10 Euros (predecessor of the MP640R) as my old one died and with all the stories going around I was concerned that it would not work as I had upgraded my MBP from Yosemite (under which the old MP600R worked fine) to Sierra 10.12.2. a while back. I configured the printer on USB first and after test printing configured it for WiFi Using the Canon IJ Network Tool which worked fine too. Tried to scan using the MP Navigator 3.0 but when it didn't see the new device I thought I would try the Fotolader (which is apparently the Dutch name for Image Capture). As it did not see any devices either and Sierra 10.12.4 was pending I went ahead and installed it, thinking it can't hurt and might help. After the update Fotolader (Image Capture) still did not see any devices so I went back into Navigator and clicked on Voorkeuren (Preferences) where I saw the USB printer which I could scan from and the old MP600R (WiFi). With that selected clicked on Wijzigen (Change/Modify) at which point, and this is easy to miss, a small window opens asking if you want to allow the incoming connection. When I accepted the new Printer was configured and I am now also able to scan via WiFi. BTW there is a summary of Sierra supported printers (https://support.apple.com/nl-nl/HT201465) on in which the MP600R is listed under "Niet meer beschikbaar als software updates" (Software updates no longer available) but the MP640 is listed as supported with (driver ?) version 13.7.1.0. The Canon site however says that for the MP640 El Capitein is the last supported version that they have downloads and for the MP600R its Mountain Lion.
Perhaps I will see some strange behaviour in future but for now it is working just fine.
I am planning to buy an MP640 2nd hand soon as they are being dumped due to not working under Sierra (which I very much doubt). BTW Still do not see the Device under FotoLader (Image Capture).

So now I have bought the MP 640 I said I would (a bit more expensive @ 25 Euros) and attached it using USB to my MBP (running Sierra 10.12.4) and saw when I opened Printers and Scanners saw that it had been automatically configured and I was able to print to it. There was also a scan tab present but when I clicked on that the program that opened was apparently unable to connect to the scanner. I also tried using the MP Navigator 3.0 which gave the same problem (could see the device but not use it. I then configured the MP 640 for WiFi using the Canon IJ Network Tool and after configuring the printer was able to print over WiFi. I also saw another Device that I could add and that was the MP 640 as scanner (Bonjour scanner whatever that is). However after adding it still not able to scan, not with MP Navigator nor with Image Capture (Fotolader in Dutch). After some googling around I found on the Canon Site under software for El Captain MP Navigator EX Ver. 3.0.6 (OS X) which I installed and lo and behold I was able to scan using MP Navigator EX 3.0(6). MP Navigator 3 still does not work, nor does Image Capture. Hope this may help some one ...

Thanks for posting that answer. I'm sure it will help someone with similar issues.

For others reading this thread note that with printer drivers the driver from an earlier version of OS X may work with the newest OS if the two OS versions are close enough in release date. A printer's El Capitan drivers (10.11), for example, might work with Sierra (10.12) but I wouldn't expect drivers from say 10.6 to work.

Update ! Replaced my MacBook Pro with a Mac mini and neither the Image Capture nor printer function now works. Advice from another thread is to buy another printer - but I don't want to !

Hi again - a 'blast from the past', well at least earlier this year! :) Assume that you've 'power cycled' the printer and rebooted the Mac Mini - no go? Let us know if you're running Sierra? As to 'buying another printer', I've suggested that a number of times on this forum and others have too, so often the best recommendation considering the cheap cost of these printers (OTOH, buying INK - UGHH!) - let us know and good luck. Dave

Yes Sierra Dave but hate generating waste machines despite cheapness of new ones.
