No internet connection

Ok I reinstalled XP now there is no internet whatsover, I can't activate it either. It won't even let me make a manual connection or an automatic one. Could this problem be caused that I reinstalled XP twice? I bought an OEM version and it came with two CD's the 32 bit and the 64 bit. I'm using the 32 bit one, if I reinstall (pain in the bottom) using the 64 bit version will I be able to get online and activate the thing?
