is it possible to open them up to upgrade the RAM and Hard drive, or are both of these now onboard????

The memory modules are soldered to the logic board. While the flash drive (SSD) can be changed, it's expensive and the work should probably be done by a qualified tech. Our advice is to order a retina with as much memory and as large a flash drive that you need.

The memory is not upgradable, but the SSD can be upgraded following these instructions from iFixit. Getting the SSDs at a decent price is a different story..:)
