I was told that when the new OS X Lepard I could get it for free since I just purchased a new MacBook from Apple. Is this true or do I have to buy the new OS X Lepard when it comes out?

You usually have to buy the new Mac within 30 days of the release date of the new system, otherwise you pay the $129 like the rest of us. If you bought a Mac recently, you're not getting Leopard for free....

I think students get it for $70, atleast thats how much tiger is/was when it came out. So thats pretty nice, but $130 for an OS isnt bad especially one made by Apple.

I don't think you'll ever see that, at least not as long as Steve is in charge....

By PC I assume you mean non-Apple built box...

That would NEVER happen (at least without hacking, which is illegal to discuss here). But why would Steve put OS X out for Windows when he could just sell it with Macs only and make more money by selling the computer along with the OS? And why would anyone buy a crappy PC anyway?

If you can sell 20 Million copies at, say, $200 a pop as opposed to 500,000 computers at an average of, say, $2,000 each, which is the better deal?

There is an argument to be made that Apple could sell OSX to a lot of disgruntled Windows users who want to keep their hardware or build their own. The problem then becomes the same as MS has. You have to be able to support every configuration on every computer in every circumstance, and everyone will find something to complain about.. By controlling the hardware, Apple controls "the whole experience" vice just the OS portion.

This is a 20+ year old argument that has not and likely never will be solved.

I believe it should be mac exclusive and they should not let it loose to the public not owning macs. If they really want it that bad, they can either save up to buy a powermac / imac / macboo pro, or then can save up for a lot less time and buy a mini/ macbook. rather then just buying the os and putting it on a computer that already might be broken and they are hoping for osx to be the thing that fixes it.

Yes, the same as 10.1 to 10.2, 10.2 to 10.3 and 10.3 to 10.4...

IIRC 10.0 to 10.1 was free though, then again, 10.0 sucked so bad, they almost HAD to give it away for free.....

I would be wiling to pay upwards of $230 if it was as good as people area hyping it up to be. I wish I had an intel mac because I have heard there are going to be some amazing features for intel macs.

me too, I very much like ppc, but I wouldn't mind something like a mini just to fool around with

I am planning on staying all ppc in my studio for a while, my next purchase is going to be 1 or maybe 2 xserve g5 cluster nodes.. does anybody know if they release leopard for servers at the same time as they release the os for workstations/computers?
