Hi Keen, and welcome to the forum! I may repeat a few things MacInWin said but I'll try not to. To answer your questions: 1. There are a few big retailers that can offer customization, but they are not cheaper -- since all they are doing is ordering the custom machine from Apple instead of you doing the same. 2. The iMac line just got refreshed, the MacBook Air I would expect to see updated around April (ie a year from the last update). There is a rumour that the next MBA will merge the 11 and 13 inch models into one 12-inch model, I don't buy it but who the heck knows. 3. Have you considered an iPad with a keyboard case instead of an MBA? Not that the MBA isn't completely awesome, but the iPad might do everything you need it to do on-the-go, and it's way lighter and cheaper than the MBA. If you do stick with a notebook, I'd suggest looking at Chronosync to keep files synced beyond what iCloud does for you. 4. Nothing you mention in your fourth question requires you to install Windows, so while you certainly CAN do it, on the MBA space is going to be at a premium and you may want to rethink that for that machine. The MBA and iMac can handle Office documents, streaming videos and many Steam or top-brand games without issue and without Windows. 5. Optical drives, if you really need them, are cheap and external. No good reason to include them built-in, really. As for tips, there's Switch101 on Apple's site (just search for "switch101" and you'll find it off any search engine), and the essay I wrote (a bit dated now but still 99 percent valid) in the link below. Have fun!
