Hi, I have a question about my new macbook, it runs really hot, about 75 degrees celsius idle, and 80-95 when I have a decent amount of applications running. My brother's white macbook runs at 60 and max about 75. Is there a reason his runs so much cooler? Is my book going to peter out from running so hot?
thanks.

What surfaces are you putting your MBP on? What applications are you running? I have 10 applications running right now. Firefox with 10 tabs open, Photoshop with two 30"X40" pictures open, Itunes, adium, and quick time pro with a movie running and I'm sitting at 58°C. This is on a MB.

Noticed the MBP's that have a dedicated video card seem to run hotter when activated.

I was running skype with a video conference, which was taking about 50% total CPU, setting it on my lap, I always have itunes, skype, adium, word, mail, safari, and of course istat running. right now as I have no video going on any apps I m only running at 55 degrees, but as soon as I do something mildly processor or gpu intensive, temp goes way up. Will it hurt it to for instance play a game, where it usually sets at 85+?

No it wont. They are built to get hot. If for any reason it gets too hot it will shut itself off. Just enjoy your machine and stop worrying so much. CPU and GPU intensive programs produce heat and there isn't anything you can really do about it.

... beyond what Apple has already done about it, ie developed an incredibly sophisticated cooling system.

For the sake of future generations, however, I would discreetly suggest to you that getting that MBP off your lap and onto a riser (that allows some airflow on the bottom of the machine) may have beneficial effects both to the machine and to your, er, lap.

lol thanks, I will stop worrying, I have actually had three macbooks since 2006, every couple years I sell one to a family member and upgrade, it's nice to have a big family that all like macs. Actually I kinda like it on my lap, I don't keep my house really warm during the day, and the laptop warms me up! :)

Just so you know, MB and MBPs are not laptops. They are called Notebooks. They aren't meant to be used on your lap for obviously reasons. They get really hot and well that could lead to burn marks and temporary infertility in males. >_>"

If it exceeds 100-105 C, you should be very worried.

Just curious but are you using any case for the mac? I had a problem that mine ran really hot while in the Speck case, however as soon as I removed the case, the temperature went back down to the normal temp.
