Just get an external and save the trouble. I am not too certain but I am pretty sure you can put any in there. Someone else may come along and be able to say for sure though.

That's an excellent resource for finding compatible hard drives and CD/DVD drives. Give that a search and see what you come up with. Macs do use the standard IDE optical drives with PC connectors. To take it out, take the front plastic optical drive bezel off by pressing the 2 tabs on the side toward the CD drives, then push the tabs out of the slots. There are 2 screws on the front holding the optical drive carrier in place. Remove these and pull the carrier straight out then swap the drive and reinstall.

But for the most part, you can put any DVD burner in there and it should work. I just ordered a Lite-On DVD burner for my G4 MDD so I'll let you know if I have any issues with it, but I doubt I will. They are only $28 shipped at newegg.com, and I swear by Lite-On optical drives.

the Pioneer A03's and A04 were the superdrives back then. I put an A03 in my old G4 and it worked as good as if it came from the factory. iDVD, DVD Player and DVDSTP worked as well.
