I'm looking at an ibook on ebay which I might be able to snag in the next day or so for a great price. I already have a powerful intel iMac and I'm hung on whether I really need a laptop in college this year or not as I am an entering freshman. My funds arn't that great and the laptop would be primary word processing in library, listening to music, garageband, and simple stuff.

Will g4 ibooks still be compatable with new software for a few more years down the road?

Thanks

Yes.
The iBooks are extremely reliable and durable. Apple will be supporting PowerPC chips for years before they actually stop creating applications compatible. And since your funds are limited, after you save up you can sell your iBook (they retain a lot of their value) then buy a macbook / pro.

Yes... and I really liked having a laptop in college, especially in the classes that had WiFi access. Campus computers suck.

G4 iBook
I'd say so. I bought an iBook purely for University use. Works a treat all round.

ditto, the ibook is great for college , I did the same as you, bought an ibook off ebay, its great on campus/in lobby as wifi is everywhere, if your ibook doesnt have an airport card dlink makes a usb adapter with osx drivers, dwl-g122 its 802.11b/g and is working great for me, I got it for under 20$ with shipping, my pc crashes far more the the ibook, infact the ibook never crashes, mines a G3 600mhz 12 inch, though I find it more then fast enough for what I use it for (music, dvd's word processing and internet)
