New HD in macbook pro - still grinding but now overheating too

Hi folks,
I've a Macbook Pro 2.16HZ 17" (about three and half years old).
The 100GB HD has never been big enough and as it was out of warranty and it was making a slow cyclic grinding noise, I decided to swap it out for a 500GB hard drive.
Following advice online I replaced it with a Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200rpm 2.5" drive. I used ifixit as a guide to swap over and followed it to the letter.
The HD transfer etc went fine - or so I thought.
I was using it last night with my headphones on when my other half caught my attention to let me know that it was making a series racket (noise).
The grinding noise is back but much worse! In addition the underside, in the middle, just above the battery compartment and the surrounding area was super hot. As in 'burnt fingers to touch' hot.
I'm thinking that the grinding noise might be one of the cooling fans rather than the HD.
It's a slow cyclic type sound - almost one second out of two.
Any thoughts?

I'm thinking you're on the right track, but you know what I'm going to say next:

Take it to a tech. Don't try to fix this yourself.
