new folders on desktop

I made a new folder for my desktop to put recipes in it.. A whole bunch of other icons from my desktop decided to move in. How do I get rid of them They show on desktop and in the folder. If i delete the one in the folder, the other one is deleted also.
Your help will be appreciated.

Welcome to the Mac-Forums.

It sounds like you may be referring to the Launchpad.app? If not, and you created an actual folder and placed it on your desktop and other icons showed up in it, then you may have inadvertently included them. And as a note, it's not a good idea to place folders on your desktop similar to the way it's done in Windows. It's best to create that folder with your Finder and place it in "Documents".
