New backdoor attempts to exploit Macs for DDoS attacks

macbookair2011-2.jpg
A new backdoor intrusion attempts to turn Macs into bots for distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and can also open them to other exploits, says security firm ESET. The malware is operated through IRC networks, and connects to one of a list of IRC servers so it can interpret commands received in a chat channel. Beyond turning Macs into bots, the malware can also enable file downloads by remote users, or execution of shell commands....

Yeah, it's probably like the new flash trojan - which according to the warnings about it - Intego has only seen it 1 (that's one) time in the wild so far.

Having said that, your first reaction to any site that pops something up on the screen wanting you to download something should be to leave that site immediately and don't go back.

My question on this IRC chat one above is the word "attempts". What does that mean? According to my understanding of the word, that means it didn't work. It either ddi something or it didn't. Which is it? And it "can"? As in it "could" do something else if it were to work in the first place? That whole article really leaves me scratching my head.

On MF IRC chat, no in fact it's very much alive. Only issue I had a few weeks back was some FreeNode Bot trying to get into my network and my DLink Dir-655 with a very outstanding SPI Firewall, kept rejecting the attempts. MY ISP yelled as my Dlink would not let it in and kept bouncing it back to the sender! :D Grin

It just stopped the next day and never happened since. That has nothing to do with that so called Malware in the report above, but I was very impressed at the Hardware Firewire in my Dlink keeping them out of my network! It was some ID thing connected with Freenode, our IRC server. Told VanSmith about it the day it happened.
