I have recently come over form the "Dark side" and have now bought a mac for my wife as well. However, I am having trouble sharing files between the two Macs. I keep trying but am not getting anywhere. I am not sure that I am searching for the answer with the best possible question. Any direction would help.

Give this summary a quick read. If you are only sharing files occasionally either of the first methods will work. If you are going to share files regularly look at the section on AFP File Sharing.

Although the article stops at 10.8.1 the same procedures apply under OS X 10.10 Yosemite.

Way... way too many specs to list.
On both Macs open up Systems Preferences, Sharing and make sure File Sharing is checked, and that the public folder has appropriate permissions (read is default for Other, you might want it to be Read/Write)
