The "My Passport" drive is made by Western Digital not Seagate. How did you wipe the drive clean and did you reformat it correctly? A backup drive for Time Machine must be formatted to Mac OS Extended Journaled. Once you've done that you need to tell Time Machine about the new drive before making an initial full backup.

I wiped the drive clean with the disk utility tool but clearly i seemed not to have reformatted it. How does one do that?
I did make sure that it had one petition however.
Thank you for your reply.

Click on the Partition tab in Disk Utility, and then choose Mac OS Extended Journaled from the Format options.

Click on the Partition tab in Disk Utility, and then choose Mac OS Extended Journaled from the Format options.

And also make sure the Disk Utility Option is set for creating a GUID partition format.
