Need help to reconfigure my Macbook Pro

The hard drive in my 2007 Macbook Pro died and I had it replaced. The guy reinstalled Tiger but the Leopard upgrade I got for free with it won't load. I am running it from an external optical drive since my in-laptop drive is fried.
Any ideas to help me out?

What do you mean it won't load? Can you please explain exactly what the problems you are facing while trying to install Leopard are? And how are you connected the external optical drive? USB or FireWire?
