need help opening .dta file extension

i received what should be a data spreadsheet from a professor with a .dta file extension. i have microsoft excel, but was unable to open it with that. any suggestions?

How did you try to open it? Double-clicking? It looks like it should have been named a .dat file. Try renaming to that. Or open Excel and explicitly Open the file. Or write your professor?

I don't think you have a data spreadsheet but more likely a complex data file that unless you had the software that created it, you would probably need a conversion tool ... I'd contact the professor and ask about having the spreadsheet sent again.
