my new MacBook is hanging badly

we got the upgraded white Macbook for the superdrive and the extra RAM. there's no media in the superdrive, yet the mouse pointer is freezing for ten seconds at a time, no beach ball.

any thoughts? I'm beginning to have buyers' remorse at this point.

What software is running, what are you doing when it freezes?
Have you tried re-booting and does that eliminate the issue, at least for awhile?
