Will think of a way and post back.

Is the old drive 100% dead? If you can still boot to Mavericks with the old drive, download Mavericks from the App store and make a Flash Drive installer.

There is probably another way but I have never tried it with a 100% new drive with no install media.

Since this is a 2010 MBP…it can run Snow Leopard (OS 10.6). You ned to purchase a 10.6 install disk:

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.)

- install 10.6
- connect to the Mac App Store
- download Yosemite
- install Yosemite

Good to go!:)

- Nick

p.s. A second option. If you are near an Apple Store…they would probably help you get Yosemite installed on a brand new HD.:)

If the hard drive was failing I imagine that is why Yosemite was slow especially if you did not do a fresh install.

I do recommend when you get it up and running creating a usb install of Yosemite and also create a back up.

Just a thought - and I would appreciate wiser heads on this. Could the OP download Yosemite on a Windows computer, created a usb installer and install that way? I know it could be done on another Mac and an install usb created from it but I was wondering????

Here is a Youtube video (it's in English) showing how to use CMD-OPT-R to reinstall over the Internet.

Jake, does a 2010 have that option?

As far as I'm aware for internet recovery to work the MacBook Pro needed to have shipped with Lion minimum. There's also a possibility that if the MacBook Pro shipped with a newer version of Snow Leopard than 10.6.3, the last retail version, it won't install. If that's so the OP would need to contact Apple to obtain copies of the original install DVD's. If the Yosemite installer had been saved and used to make a USB installer all would have been easy.

I'll echo the earlier post, it's likely Yosemite was slow due to the failing hard drive. Also check the installed RAM, it will run in 4GB, but 8GB or more is better. I run Yosemite on an earlier 2.8GHz Mid 2009 MBP with 8GB and a Crucial M500 SSD, it's very responsive.
