My ipad not showing it's photos on my mbpr iphotos

when l connect my iphone it automatically opens up iphotos, when l connect my ipad by usb to my mbpr, its name appears under "devices", but its photos and videos never appear, it just keeps saying "Loading" the ipad has ~20GB of media, my mbpr only has ~12GB of space in its HD. is this relevant? as my iphone has >20GB of media and that all shows up when connected. whats going on?
