Ever been in class or a meeting with your MacBook and had the Chime go off loudly when booting up your computer? Yeah, embarrasing. Install this and be happy:

Thanks to splen for pointing the software out to me :) Works on my Intel Mini and 13" MacBook!

why in the world would you ever want to mute that beautiful, wonderful chime? I realize school and office are "quiet" places, but let it ring brother...let people know you have a MAC! :)

I would turn the master volume down. Then all of your alert sounds would not bother anyone either.

i dont have no mac's
i highly suggest not turning off the chime because that chime is telling you that your computer is working properly at startuup, and a bunch of other technical stuff.

re. class and meetings etc it is relatively appropriate to hear the noise before a class or meeting begins because you shouldnt be interupting anybody. or you can close the lid put it to sleep and not have to bother with turning it on at all.

enjoy and thanks for the recommendation although it isnt something that i would personally recommend to anybody

You can also mute it without the use of programs.......
When starting up, just hold down the mute/unmute button and the chime won't sound.
I believe though that the sound will be muted when you reach your desktop. Not sure. But this comes in handy if you don't want to download anything.

My frist mac was a Powerbook 160. It was all i could afford about 6 years ago. I used the daylights out of it... even with the several problems that it had. Long story short, when i got to my freshman year at highschool, everyone had laptops to take notes and what not. These were the RICH kids, with VERY nice laptops. I will never forget the first day of class, bringing in my powerbook 160, and starting it up. "BAAAHMMMM" Everyone turned around to look curiously, and then proceded to laugh at my cinder-block of a laptop.

Anyways, what im getting at is that i LOVE the chime. Even thought i had the oldest laptop in the room, it felt good to be different for a change. I would never mute that beautiful chime!

I know what you mean, I have a PowerBook 170 and had the same looks but I loved it. That 170 STILL works great but I rarely use it now a days. It was fun because it always worked and other people with Toshiba's always messing up and my 170 always worked.

When I had my G4, I brought it to school to watch some movies. It was the last week so no one was doing anything. Here I am, no one noticed I had it out and as soon at the chime sounds, everyone turns around and crowds around me. Me and my other friend are the only ones to bring their laptops to school. lol
