Sounds like you have a POP mail server, set to the wrong port. In Mail Preferences click on your account and pick Advanced. On the bottom of the screen, if the port says 993, change it to 110. If the SSL box is checked, uncheck it. See if it works then - or if you get a different error message.

Can you check the email settings on your iBook and see what they are set to. I assume the message you are getting is something like "Invalid username or password."

If you are entering the password correctly for your email account, it might be the username. For some ISP's the user name is something like username, but for others it is a format like [email protected]. Do you have any info from your ISP on the email settings they require?

Just repeats the request for a password.
Many thanks for your thoughts. The ISP wants the email address for the user name.
Intend to reset from scratch again .
