I migrated from my very old MacBookPro to a slightly newer one. All worked out fine except my music playlists didn’t come over. That’s not much of a problem. I needed to organize my music again anyway.

Bigger issue to me is that my passwords didn’t come. I’ve read up in Apple forum and I’m using same Apple login, I’ve got everything turned on in the new Mac but nothing. The passwords are ok in my new iPhone and my iPad just nothing in the Mac running Big Sur.

I don’t have the old MacBook anymore. It was failing and it’s plug was intermittent and I wiped it before the battery completely went.

Any suggestions for what I can try next? Thanks.

Edit: I do plan to make an appointment at my Apple store which just opened re covid and ask for their help, but I thought I’d ask here first.

Diane

I presume by "passwords" you mean what was stored in the passwords of Safari. If you sync those passwords to Safari on an iPad or iPhone, you might be able to get them back by setting up sync through iCloud for Safari. If no iPad or iPhone, or no sync previous, unless you have a backup of the old system, those passwords are probably gone forever.

Before setting up any sync process, backup the iPad just in case the sync goes awry.

So my topic name got changed by auto correct. It’s keygen

I may be very confused and need to read more. On my iPad and my iPhone there is a shared “passwords” list and I assumed this same list was being used by my old Mac since it all worked seamlessly on my old Mac.

Can’t seem to find that list on my new Mac after migration.

These passwords include login info for apps too, such as this one.

I’ll keep reading. If I have to add them one by one as I need them in Mac Safari, I guess I will go that route. There aren’t that many I use often. Just surprised it’s not automatically integrated in iCloud.

Any other tips or suggestions for my education? Thanks.

I have to assume you mean KeyGen an app for generating passwords, product licensing keys etc. I was under the impression this app was only available for Windows.

I think 10+ years ago in Mac it was called keygen or key-something, but it seems to just be called passwords now.

But good news. I toggled off and on all the relevant toggles, rebooted, had a nap and lo and behold my passwords are all now in/on my Mac after migration!

I guess I just needed to be patient. It took 2+days for my photos to arrive on my new iPhone, so I guess 3 days for passwords is ok too.

Thanks for your help, all.

@DianeVan

Did you possibly mean Keychain?

Keychain stores your password and can generate suggested passwords for a given sight.

Keychain can also be synced across all devices if you set this up.

Yes, keychain. That’s it. I wonder how “passwords” and keychain are linked?

In any case, it’s all working for me now on all my devices.

It’s hard to remember all this stuff, being in my seventies and having other people set stuff up for me.

And it’s an app, keychain, not in system preferences, so I’m never reminded of it. Like disk utility. I can never remember how to format without Google help.

Thanks again.

I wonder if an admin person could change the subject of this thread to say keychain for future searchers.

Why didn't I think of that?😅 Probably because I used to have an iOS app called KeyGen. Anyway really glad it all worked out and thanks for letting us know.👍
