Messages: did this used to be called iChat? I honestly never opened or noticed it until today. Is this functional as a standalone feature? Most menu items are grayed out. I cannot change the status from off line. Using OSX 10.9.5. Could off-line here affect other apps for chatting???

Messages is the successor to iChat (along with FaceTime). You can use a variety of email addresses as your contact info but you'll need an Apple ID to set it up.

It won't affect any other chat client on your machine - they all exist independent of each other.
