I monitor my text messages on both my iPhone and Mac mini. I sent a new text from my Mac, continuing a long running conversation; a response was received but the reply was not visible in the message side of the app window; there was only a tiny grey bar where the response should have appeared (see attached screen shot). In the list of conversations on the left side of the messages window I could read the first few words of the reply, but I had to go to my iPhone to view the complete response. Why is the reply not appearing in full on my Mac? Restarting the Mac did not fix the problem. Have I reached some sort of limit on how large a thread can be displayed? (this thread has been active just over 4 years but not frequently used)

Evidently Catalina has know issues with messages. Check out this link:

I know of no limit to thread length. I certainly have some long ones. But it has been some time since I ran Catalina so I have no way to check for any issues on my end although I don't recall any.

Thank you for the link; I worked through those approaches but nothing seems to change. But it would not surprise me if it comes down to my obsolete version of macOS. My old Mac mini does not support anything newer than Catalina. I normally don't use Messages on my laptop (MacBook Air) but it supports Ventura, so I launched Messages over there and the missing message appeared in complete form. So I may have to just switch computers when it comes to Messages.

It was running 15.7.0 until this morning when I upgraded to 15.7.1 (it does not support iOS 16). But see my reply to Iclev.
