Memory troubles on an iMac rev B

Im planning on upgrading to Mac OS Panther soon so I ordered a 256mb ram chip and placed it in the top ram slot.
When booting up and loading Mac OS 9 (I havent upgraded to panther yet) it only recognises the chip as 128mb?
All the firmware updates are installed
Does anyone have any idea of how to fix this?

Apple listed the tray-loading iMacs at either 128 or 256 mb total. Using high-density chips allow double that in most iMacs. However, the memory must conform to a specific design (two banks of simms per module, each bank 128mb or less). It sounds like the module you installed does not fit the restrictions. It could be the simms are not high-density or that they are arranged in more than two banks. In any case the thing to do is contact the seller and get RAM that is certified for the iMac model you have.

Yeah it's always a good idea to go to RAM websites and look for your Mac model to see what RAM cards are compatable

Ok, apparently you cant use pc133 (which is what I used) otherwise it will only recognise half the memory

I am assuming you are talking about a Bondi Blue of one of the "5 Flavor" imacs....they use PC66 ram
