Just recently I have been having problem backing up my iPhone SE 2 locally (encrypted) to my MBP. It sticks half way through sync/backup at stage 2 of 5. I found that launching Activity Monitor and force quitting MDCrashReportTool fixes the issue but of course next time it does the same thing.
I have read on Apple Community Forums; Summary of Issues: MDCrashReportTool, Bac… - Apple Community that the file can be removed or renamed preventing the problem from occurring permanently ( see comment rsworden).

Path: /Library/Apple/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/A/AppleMobileDeviceHelper (Then Show Contents)

I was a little nervous about doing this but I found I cannot rename or move this exe file anyway so it's a moot point at the moment.

Has anyone else had this problem? It seems to have started since I started doing a local backup to my MBP whereas before when I backed up to iCloud eclusively it was not a problem.

Yes, I think I had this problem. I say "think" because very recently, I did a first-time BU of my new iPhone 15 Pro to my Mac.

After all the usual "trust" each other and Passcodes, the iPhone was recognised and the BU started. It went on and so till eventually, I left it alone and came back about an hour later and it was finished.

Since then, I back backed up the iPhone twice and it finished the job in no time.

I never thought of engaging Activity Monitor so I can't confirm the presence of MDCrashReportTool. But now that my first BU and your first BU had lengthy delays, I guess we both had that MDCrash... thing; and presumably it engages at first BU??

The issue has been around, I was surprised to read, since 2019. For me it's intermittent, any time it occurs now I just force quit MDCrashReportTool from AM. Obviously this has been reported to Apple but it only seems to occur if you backup locally rather than iCloud so perhaps it's doesn't warrent much attention.

Just as a follow up on this thread; I have found this issue with MDCrashReportTool to be ongoing. I am loath to disable SIP to edit the exe file, a suggested solution in the Apple Community Forums thread I posted in my first post, as it's tampering with things I don't really understand and may have unexpected consequences down the line. Really as stated this is an Apple issue and hopefully will be rectified by them.
I have instead, reinstalled iMazing as I already owned a registered version since 2018. Really I only removed it to save space around the time Apple introduced syncing from the Finder. I will continue to backup online to iCloud o/night and do my local backups with iMazing. I note that there is a public release of iMazing 3 beta available for testing, free to subscribers who purchased version 2 after 2020 but the finished version will not be available till next year. I am classified as a legacy subscriber so I would need to purchase it but I get a 50% discount as a loyal long time subscriber.
