I have a macbook pro 2.33ghz and yesterday I was watching some episodes of curb your enthusiasm via headphones and this morning i grabbed my computer and started some work this morning. I started it up and go tthe usual apple "start up sound" but now there's no sound on my computer.

When i click the keyboard volume buttons the volume symbol is greyed out (yet the white bars are all there).. and the volume status icon in the toolbar is greyed out as well.

I tried a restart.. anyone know how to fix this?

also, headphones still work.

I have a red light beaming out of the headphones jack as well.

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
It sounds like the switch was stuck, and in the 2nd post when you put the headphones in again, that's where it fixed it... but the main thing is that it works now.
Not bad, OP at 12:11, headphone status 12:19, resolved by 12:31 :D

true!

the only odd thing is the red optical light is still on in the headphone jack yet my on board speakers are working just fine.

You could try the plugging in and unplugging jack a few times, see if this resets it, or using a toothpick.
It just happens from time to time that when uplugging in many MBPs, where it doesn't switch itself off, but as long as your speakers are working, I wouldn't worry about it, esp if it can be fixed so easily so quickly.
If you were under warranty still, I'd have suggested taking it to Apple, but seeing as you're way out, I'd just hope that it all stays good from now on.
