 A friend gave me this computer and its great, I'm a newbie. it a Power PC, G3 233mhz/512K cache/32mb/4gb HD/24XCD-rom. thats what the sticker said on the bottom. I'm not sure what rev it is. the os is 9.1 and it is slow slow slow, I've been told that I can only put 2 sticks of 128 in this and I was reading a post from imac systems pg 3 #6, milfmann said something about putting 2 sticks of 256 in a Bonbi blue. I've bookmarked fastermacs.com and I could sure use some advice!

While Apple lists 256mg - 128 in each slot - as the max for the tray-loading iMacs, many people (including me) have been able to use a 256mg stick in each slot for 512 total. However, some people have not been able to use the 256mg sticks. There does not appear to be an identifiable reason for the difference. If you want to try the 256 chips be sure you can return them if they don't work for you.

Thanks! I'll give it a shot and keep you posted also do I need to download and install a different firmware before I install? and if so, which one should I get? If the 2 sticks of 256 don't work can I put the old ones back in if I changed the firmware? :D

Apple has issued a few firmware updates for the older iMacs. Since the updates may or may not have been installed the best thing to do is to go to the Apple site under support and search for imac firmware updates. The info will help you pick the latest. The update will check the version installed and will not function if it isn't the right one.

There will be no problem re-installing the older memory if the 256s don't work.
