Max Ram for dv400 imac?

I read on a website selling RAM for imac g3's that the maximum ram for an Imac g3 400 DV SE is 1gb. I always thought that it was 512k. Is this true? Would it mess things up to run it with two 512 sticks?

Apple lists the max for the 400DV as 512mb BUT every other source shows 1gb. From my own experience with my iMac 333 Apple lists it at 256mg but it happily purrs along with 512mg. However I know of several reports where the RAM above 256mg - on identical machines - was not recognized.
Just in case, if you go for 1gb buy the RAM where you can return it if it doesn't work.
