Did you see the picture of the home? It doesn't appear to have any remaining windows with a full pane of glass. From what I understand, he also owes the city $6000 in back taxes. So, this trade isn't quite the deal it may seem (not that any home in Detroit is really desirable).

I think what's the most interesting element here is how people are equating shelter with consumer goods. How does one equate these two things? I realize that the value of those two things is closer than ever in some cases/places but still, conceptually, how do those two correspond?

The back taxes owed does throw off the balance of the deal.

I'm just flabbergasted that a house is that cheap. The average detached house here is worth 96 times that (I also live somewhere with an overly inflated housing market). I want a home for $3000 (not that one though and I suspect, no house "worth" than much).

Clearly you haven't been to Detroit. A mud hut in ISIS-occupied Iraq is far more hospitable.

Along the lines of what Chris mentioned. It's not the house (or just the house)…it's the neighborhood. I know there are efforts & incentives to try to revitalize neighborhoods in the Detroit area. But it's an uphill battle.

In many many other areas of the country…the land itself would be worth way way more than $3000!

Not in a long time (I've got family in Windsor) and when I was, it still wasn't a place to write home about.

I suppose it's like anywhere other nation - there are really nice places, really terrible places and a nice spot in the middle. There are parts of TO that you'd have to pay me a lot of money to live in.

I scrolled to the bottom, yet again making the mistake of having an interest in the comments, when I found this news story. People are weird...

All the time I see stories on MSN.com, CNN.com, Yahoo.com, etc. Where they do the "What would $250,000, $500,000, or $1,000,000 buy in xyz areas around the country?"

And of course that sort of money would buy next to nothing in New York City or Beverly Hills…but might buy half the city of Detroit!;)

All I can say is…there aren't many places in most developed countries…that an iPhone 6 would buy/trade for a house!;)

Good grief, that's not weird that's just bizarre as a comment says - "8 years for a drunken joyride on a forklift (16mph, BTW)? ..."

Really...???

The article notes the following:
He had pleaded guilty to theft of $1,500-$20,000, driving while intoxicated, aggravated assault on a public servant and evading arrest
I'd say that warrants some time in prison.

Who hasn't:

- stolen something large?
- driven a car drunk and got caught?
- punched a cop in the face?
- then ran from the cop they just punched in the face?

…AND…is trying to trade a $3000 home for an iPhone 6???;)

Of course. I partake in some combination of those things every week. ;)
