*Major* Problem after update!

I'm writing this message on behalf of my girlfriend who is running one of the latest emacs (can't rember exact spec) as for the following reason she can't!...

She has just downloaded a security update (her computer says she is now on 10.3.8). Her computer now won't allow her to do much at all. After restarting when prompted following the update, pretty much all her icons won't allow her to click on them, and when she manages to open an app that allows her to type (such as msn) it all appears in foreign and strange characters. She has tried restarting 3 or 4 times to no avail?! She pretty much can't do anything!

Any help?! Please!

ever since i dled the new security update...

mein powerbook ist kaputt.. it almost boots up and hangs at the "loading login window" i left it there for an hour and it never got past that point. i tried taking the battery out, restarting, etc. I booted from techtool4 cd and it didnt come up with anything... any ideas? my powermac handled the update fine, but then again i dont have a logon window on my desktop

Had a simular prob when i tried to DL latest sec. update. System froze up right after user login, just a blank screen that never went to desktop. Has anyone had the same issues??

Whew, escaped though a combination of luck and ignorance again. The update went fine for me.

On a side note: Did anyone else misread the subject as "Ever since I died, the new security update..."

lol it went fine for my powermac, but that didnt have a logon window.. come to think of it, this tanks kinda slow now

At first my tackpad didn't work, then I rebooted and to my dismay the trackpad was still messed (I really had to "give it" to get the pointer to move just a little bit). But then 20 seconds later it seemed to work fine, and it still works fine over an hour later, so we will see. This is on a brand new powerbook 12" btw.

just got of the phone with the senior specialist.. he said all i can do is archive and reinstall

I installed just fine, but I am using an external keyboard and display so who knows. Maybe later I'll unplug and see what issues, if any, I have.

No problems on my eMac here at home (iMac is at school so it won't be updated for a few weeks) and speed is just like it always was

Repair Permissions

In fear of stating the obvious [sorry if it is] - has she repaired permissions after the update?

try. repair permissions. After every software update, and about every 2 weeks: close all apps and log totally off. Log on, go in Finder, Applications. Utilities, Disk Utility. After the message -getting disk information- select volume (below the hard drive name -upper left corner). Just highlight it. Now look to the lower two things are there near the middle, verify permissions, repair permissions. Click repair permissions

Since you probably are unable to get into Disk Utility to access repair permissions you will need to take her System Restore or OS X disk to get to disk utility.

Insert your Mac OS X CD-ROM disc or Restore DVD disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.

Click the First Aid tab.
Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
Click Repair.

Well, if you do decide to go through with the update, back up some stuff first. And if something should happen, menace3054 has the solution for us, because he called Apple himself.

I did the update on my iBook and everything went fine, I'm just debating myself, if I should update my iMac G5 now. But you should also verify/repair permissions, before and after the update.

No problems here, log on is fine.
I always quit all open programs (except for the download) just before it finishes downloading.
Zero problems updating anything since OSX3.1.

I have had no porblems after installing the security update on my iMac. It sucks when people install something Apple developed to make our systems better only to have it foul everything up. :/
