I think his drive may still be ok, but he keeps going back to an old version of Disk Utility to look at it and it thinks the drive has failed because it doesn't understand APFS. And then he thinks he needs to "fix" the drive when it may well be perfectly good. The only reason for wanting to reinstall Mojave clean is to get the muck cleaned out that is taking up 840GB of the drive. I also think the USB drive is still OK, and may well be bootable and usable.</p></blockquote><p></p>
