''mail'' won't send out on snow leopard

Hello,
My ''mail'' just stopped sending several weeks ago . , I have re-typed the SMTP preffs several times to no avail ... This happened before , and I sometimes had to turn mail off , when I turned it on it would send , but this time nada .
Any thoughts,
