Mail problems

I have used the mail application on my MacBook Pro for almost 6 months and have had no problems. I recently just opened an email that was Spam but didn't realize it until after I clicked on it. It instantly deleted all of my messages, but only on the Mail application, not on my account when I logged in on AOL. Now it doesn't work. I deleted the account and added it back on but it still says there is a problem taking my account online. Anyone know what to do? Don't need it really but it is nice and easy to use. Any suggestions would be nice.
