mail opens for 2 seconds then quits, everytime

I have been looking through the forum for some help with this matter but haven't found a similar problem.

Every time I open my mail it gives me the spinning rainbow then crashes with the typical "application Mail quit unexpectedly"

I ran the Report and got the following, it doesn't make any sense to me.

I'm not the most savvy mac dude but dang, this is a bummer.

I believe it started to happen after I edited a smart folder in mail.

I also have other accounts on the iMac for the wife and kids and the mail works in their accounts.

Please help,

You do not say what OS you are using, however if you have checked the Mail preferences and all is well, have you (1) tried Repair Permissions and if no joy (2) boot from the install DVD and run Repair Disk from there as you cannot repair a disk you are booted from.

the title said 10.5, if I need more than that I'll recheck.

I can't get to the preferences for mail on my account/login as the mail shuts down too quickly.

I can get to the preferences on my wife's account/login.

I've been unable to find repair permissions in the OS through spotlight but will keep searching.

Next I'll try the install from DVD.

Question. All of my mail is setup to be stored on .me. so blowing away the mail on my login and re-installing mail should be no drama, correct?

There are two maintenance programs that are very popular here, onyx and mainmenu. I run them both.

I'm having a similar problem except after mail crashes the first time it will boot up the second. I'll probably run these two programs later today to see if that helps.

Both are free and will repair permissions.

tks dakineyj, onyx seems to be a pretty complicated piece of software, I'm going to have to read up on it a little before I jump in on that one.

Is onyx pretty fail safe, or is it something you really need to be careful with?

I think that sounds like a dumb question, sorry.

To find Repair Permissions go to Utilities>Disk Utility and Repair Permissions is on the left. Just click Repair Permissions and go make a cup of coffee as it will take about twenty minutes and don't worry about the messages you see. Just let it run its course.

Just open up Onyx. It will check SMART something and then check the startup disk. After it is done doing that hit the Automation tab, check what you want it to do and hit start.

In your library folder in your home folder look for a folder called preferences. In that folder search for a file for called com.apple.mail.plist.

move this file to the desktop and then relaunch Mail.

If mail seems to be running fine then you can delete that file you moved to the desktop.

However if the problem persists then move the file back to ~/library/preferences

Finally had a chance to check your remedy and look for the "com.apple.mail.plist" file

That file wasn't in the preferences folder.

now what??

Just one question - you did go to Home in the menu bar and open Library>Preferences there as the file will not appear in the System Library?

harry, you were right, I was totally looking in the wrong place.

It all seems to be working just fine now but I assume I'll have to go change a couple things back as not everything seems to be in place.

Either way you slice it I'm wicked stoked!
