I then killed the accounts (including iCloud, which was inactive). I started by setting up iCloud and letting it sync mail (had to go through a whole story cause I never used it for email before). It then created my GMX account automatically (I assume it did this because my GMX email address is "linked" to my iCloud) and it asked me if it should activate it, which I let it do.
