the keyboard thingy interest me. I've not been able to connect an old A1016 wireless mechanical keyboard for a coupe of years. I wonder, I just wonder...

I'll report back.

And it's a big, fat....

NOPE!!

Thanks Apple. My perfectly usable wonderful mechanical keyboard is defectively E-waste, or a smart ornament. Seems they don't want me using my legacy keyboard :-(

I assume that keyboard is still in working condition, but what happens when you try to attempt to use it???

Have you tried most of these suggestions from those who seem to be able to be using theirs I wonder what your difference is that's causing your problem???

And maybe even here:

And I wonder if an old PRAM or SMC Reset help get things working after another reboot and new setup attempt.

Hi Patrick

Yes I tried all the bluetil terminal commands several times and it never worked for me. I've tried re-sets and re-boots again numerous times, though I'll try once more now I've updated :)

The keyboard is perfect. Bluetooth settings "see" it as a device and give the option to connect, but it just won't complete that connect.

How bloody annoying and I wonder where the Hang Up is???

Maybe have a look through some of these hits in case you missed anything to check and maybe try again on some of those you have already tried:

Have you tried taking the keyboard to a local Mac store and seeing if it works on any of their machines???

Does it show up in the list of System Information when you connect it???

Do you have or use any other Bluetooth devices that actually do work as they should???

Maybe these guys have a suggestion that might work:

As they say, if you've tried before maybe try again.

Also, maybe try setting up your Bluetooth System Preferences Setup Assistant to auto-start on boot-up.

I don't have an Apple store near me, but this problem started with my old 2017 iMac and perservered into my new M1 Mac Mini. It will also show up but not connect to any of the 3 Apple MacBooks in the house either.

I think the issue is with the handshake protocol as all devices can "see" the keyboard; they just won't connect to each other. If I remember this all happened after updating to 12.2 or 12.3. I keep hoping with each new release or update that Apple will fix this, but I guess it's not high on their list of priorities! And I have emailed them, but never did get a reply of any kind.

I guess all I can do is try again with the "bluetil" and other fixes now I've updated to 13.4, but my guess is Apple have deliberately bricked older keyboards.

I've got my eye on a wired A1048 in excellent condition on eBay as a replacement, as I really enjoy and prefer mechanical style full-size ones, so not all is lost. It's just really frustrating and such a waste of a lovely keyboard. It could still be used with legacy MacOS I think, but I wouldn't want anyone to part with money and be in the same boat as me and a small minority of people with this device.

But if anyone (in the UK) wants it and is willing to pay postage and packing they can have it for free :)

As also happened to my Apple Superdrive. Sill lots to like about Apple products, but sometimes this stuff is bewildering.

Just a few more suggestions to try if you haven't done so already:
How to Troubleshoot Bluetooth Issues on a Mac

And a few more hits here to go through and double check:

It seems so close yet so far away from working properly, super frustrating and annoying for you...

PS: have you tried performing the appropriate SMC resets for your Mac and restarting and trying the Bluetooth setup again.
I tend to be a bit like a dog with a bone when such annoying known working situations arise.

Geez, it took me over 3 months to get my old Logitech M705 wireless mouse customized and working properly after an attempted upgrade failed and also wiped out most of my backups. Anyway, it's now finally working as I want and that was with using a USB dongle and not a fussy Bluetooth connection.

Good luck and give it another try again. Maybe some of that good Welsh whiskey would help.

I'll give these another go (I've tried them before but you never know!!).
Not feeling up to any tasks at the moment but once I feel better I'll try and let you know if they work.

The Penderyn distillery is qiute close to my home, and they're currently building another within a couple of miles of me! Unfortunately, I don't drink!!! I've been told the single malt is particularly tasty though. I'd imagine it's available in the U.S. if you want to give it a try :)

I'm not a big whiskey drinker either but the occasional shot is nice, and we have quite a large selection of the Penderyn distillery products here in Canada. It seems to have quite a good reputation among the Whiskey drinking folks.
