Update - ***FIXED (BUT NOT SOLVED)*** (See last entry)

Please help! I am in PANIC mode. ALL of my inbox subfolders have disappeared and I cannot find how to get these subfolders and contents back.

In my mail, I had created subfolders for all sorts of things...
Family
Banking
Designs
Clients
etc etc etc
These have disappeared!

In my Mac Mail (using ElCapitan 10.11.2 on an iMac if that matters) I was going to create yet another subfolder - clicked on the "+" next to the word, Inbox, and BANG! All my subfolders and their contents were gone from view. I have tried to find these on the computer to restore them - I know I did not delete all these emails. There is just one account.

If I highlight INBOX then go to the Mailbox>Rebuild, the subfolders do NOT reappear.
One place online suggested going into the menu and using "Synchronize account." Nothing.
I've also tried to resolve this by unchecking and re-checking "Enable this account." Nope.
Where IS my saved mail???

Can someone please chime in with a solution? I will be forever thankful.

Update: IT IS FIXED - BUT still a mystery. After closing the Mail App and re-opening...about the 4th time!...the subfolders reappeared. I am VERY thankful, and mystified since NO changes or fixes were applied...by me. I have no choice but to say, "It must be a bug."

Thanks all for viewing.

Just in case you run into the same problem again.... do this:

Very gently and slowly bring your mouse cursor (or trackpad) to the right side of the column where your mail and folders are. You will see a small + sign appear beside your mailbox. Further on down to your subfolders doing the same thing, the word "hide" will appear. ;D If you accidentally click on that, your subfolders on your Mac mail folder will disappear! If that happens, just bring the cursor back and select "show" or "unhide".

Why Apple has chosen these small hidden features is beyond me as it just causes confusion and headaches especially for new users.

chscag, is this another new additional stupid Apple GUI "feature" in Apple's El Cap'n Mail.app to watch out for…???

Bill Atkinson must be having heart and mental attacks over a lot of their recent "GUI" stuff!!!

I think Apple started using that with Yosemite but I can't be sure. Someone else will have to verify that. In any event, it's another stupid annoyance we certainly can do without. I'm especially annoyed today because I was trying to add a "recovery email address" to my Apple security features. Except I could not remember my two secret questions that I wrote down somewhere, someday, who knows? Anyway, I wound up calling Apple Care and after giving 2 quarts of blood, my birthright, and 10 head of Texas longhorns, the nice man from Apple Care reset my secret questions for me. What total BS this security stuff has turned into. What ever happened to "Scouts Honor" and holding up three fingers? ;P O:)

They all went cheap and decided to only use a single middle finger which you may have noticed doesn't work properly either!!!

After looking at multiple threads in multiple sites with complicated solutions that didn't work, I found yours. Simple and it works. Thanks!

Welcome and drop by anytime.

chscag and others often have great solutions to many of Apple's various OS quirks.
