I have a message saying 'MacKeeper is updated successfully! Would you like to launch it?' Judging by other comments the answer would appear to be 'No'.

What is it?
Where does it come from?
Does the message suggest that it has somehow self-installed?
If so should I delete it with Adware Medic?

Hardly anything self-installs itself. So the answer is that you've installed MacKeeper knowingly or unknowingly..

Go through these steps to uninstall MacKeeper and then run Adware Medic to do any residual clean up as well..

Thanks for that. Some bizarre results. Trash had over 48k items to delete. Some of these seemed to be in Time Machine so I tried quitting it. As TM is deleting old files having reached capacity, presumably it deleted files on the external hard drive to its own Trash?

No adware was found after restart so it looks as if MacKeeper has gone.

Adware Medic will not touch MacKeeper.

The latest issue of Macworld magazine (February digital edition) has a very good trouble shooting article on how to get rid of MacKeeper and the MacKeeper pop ups.

I bought a brand new MBA last week.

I only installed 2 items on it:

- adware medic
- microsoft silverlight

both from the official sites. I can't imagine aware medic allowing a back door install but microsoft?!! Hard to believe they'd allow such practices but those are the only 2 sites I downloaded anything from.

imagine my horror when looking in finder to discover mackeeper in there

I followed their uninstall instructions so hope it's now totally expelled from my MBA
