Macbook Won't Startup

Hey there, my Macbook has got a major problem!
I was browsing when the whole thing froze - mouse not moving - couldn't do anything, so I was forced to shut it down by holding the power button.
Trouble is now it won't reboot - just getting a grey screen with a flashing question mark.
I tried to boot from the backup cd but when it got to the stage using the installer software to assign the destination volume there wasn't one there available.
As a novice mac user I'm now completely lost, can anyone help?
Desperate to get it working again so thanks for looking.

Sounds like your hard drive crashed.

Since it's a MacBook, it's still under the one-year warranty. I suggest calling Apple or stopping by a local Apple Store.
