Macbook Startup Problems

Ok so my friends Macbook is currently having some issues. When she turns on the computer, the computer makes the proper bong sound then starts to load the login page but the screen then goes to a blank grey screen, at which point the pinwheel starts turning. I have tried booting it into safe mode but that does not work so far. Help would be much appreciated. =D

Powerbook G4 1.67ghz 2GB ram DL SuperDrive
maybe try resetting the pram?

pram reset did not work. Any other suggestions?
