Ive been having a bit of an issue with my macbook, it shuts off randomly without warning, generally it happens when using safari, any time its happened very few other programs have been opened. The macbook screen goes black, then the mac start up tune sounds, and the computer has shut down because of a problem screen, it starts back up ok and works fine after this but it shouldnt be doing this and its a bit of a nuisance at the moment.

All of my apps/programs are up to date at the moment, and ive been regularly backing up the macbook to my external hard drive to ensure i dont loose anything.

Where should i start into solving this problem.

Have you done anything to it recently…like upgrading the ram?

Last year i changed the ram to 8gb and the hard drive to 1TB, it never gave any problems since i fitted these parts, i have updated to yosemite within the last month.

Ok…since it's been a while since the upgrades…that's probably not it. What about the MacBooks fan. Is the fan loud/high rpm's? Maybe we're talking a high temp situation (could be dirty inside).

On the other hand...if the fan isn't loud…maybe it isn't working properly (thus computer is getting too hot).

Just some thoughts/possibilities,:)

It doesnt have any overheating issues to speak of, it warms up when its doing things but thats always been how it gets, the fan still works perfectly.

It shut down about half an hour ago on me, i copied the report it produced, is there any point in pasting the full problem report into this thread?

Is it shutting down or rebooting? And yes, please paste the report to your next post so we can take a look. Perhaps we can see something that's causing it.

Its probably best described as randomly restarting, it shuts down, then restarts itself but asks for any key to be pressed first, then it starts up again, this is the report:

Looks like a problem with your graphics card, and what you're experiencing is called a kernel panic. Either the GPU is overheating or it's defective. Not much you can do about repairing it since the GPU is integrated on the Logic Board. Usually, the fix requires a swap out of the Logic Board.

panic(cpu 1 caller 0xffffff7f943d0f63): "GPU Panic: [<None>] 3 3 7f 0 0 0 0 3 : NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: CFG 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0xffffffff, BAR0 0xd2000000 0xffffff812d410000 0x0a5480a2, D0, P3/4\n"@/SourceCache/AppleGraphicsControl/AppleGraphicsControl-3.7.21/src/AppleMuxControl/kext/GPUPanic.cpp:127

Sorry for my lack of knowledge here but is the logic board what the motherboard would be on a big tower pc, ie the main guts of the computer?

I assume changing the logic board means stripping the computer down and putting the new part in, would a used one work, is there any issues with serial numbers etc?

Yes…same thing.:)

The other assumption is…a replacement logic board/motherboard will most likely cost too much (compared to the current value of the computer) to be a financially good thing to do. Unless you can find one that's REALLY inexpensive.

This macbook cost me a bit over £1000 back in 2010, i also paid for apple care which wasnt cheap either, its a bit disappointing for it only to last 4 years.
My old laptop which i had before the macbook was a dell inspiron 6400 is still working without any problems other than the battery not holding any charge, a relative still is using that laptop on a daily basis.
