macbook pro yosemite running no audio with headphones

I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing the same problem I am having with yosemite. I have a macbook pro 2011 and I can hear sound from my speakers nut when I plug in my headphones i cant hear anything. I just upgraded and didnt have this issue on mavericks.

Any help would be appreciated

I had it when trying to play a video. I went into System Settings/Sound and chose my plugged in earphones as the output device. They worked then. I haven't investigated why it didn't automatically sense and use them, but at least they did work.
