"I also cannot create a new WORD document or use any of the OFFICE apps" As MacInWin wrote, "there are alternatives to MS products to read/write Word documents." I recently upgraded to Catalina (which I have grown to like), but in that process, I, like you, lost the use of Word & Excel. I am now using SoftMaker Office 2018. A couple of other just as good alternatives are LibreOffice and OpenOffice. All three of those have free versions, all of them will open & edit documents with Microsoft extensions (doc, docx, xls, xlxs) as well as Save documents retaining their existing Microsoft extensions. I do not use that option, but if I were sharing documents with others who might be discomfited by the sight of an "alien" extension, I probably would.
